  • Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML)

  • Other Philadelphia-chromosome-positive conditions

How Imatinib works

Imatinib is a tyrosine-kinase inhibitor. It precisely blocks the abnormal BCR-ABL signal that drives CML cells to multiply - one of the first true targeted cancer therapies.

How to take Imatinib

Usually taken once daily with food and a large glass of water, as the oncologist prescribes. Taken long-term with regular monitoring.

Available strengths: 100 mg, 400 mg. Always follow your own doctor's instructions.

  • Fluid retention and puffiness
  • Nausea, muscle cramps
  • Low blood counts (monitored)

Imatinib vs Gleevec

Imatinib and Gleevec contain the same active ingredient, Imatinib, at the same strengths (100 mg, 400 mg), and work in exactly the same way. Gleevec is the originator brand; Imatinib is the generic equivalent. Generic substitution, brand selection and patient suitability are clinical decisions that should be made with the treating clinician. If a request is eligible, the proposed product information is confirmed in writing before any next step.

How generic medicine information is assessed

Generic medicine information is assessed in the context of the patient’s prescription, requested strength and destination. The treating clinician should remain the decision-maker for any generic substitution. Availability and product details are not assumed from this public page and are confirmed only if an individual case is eligible.

Ordering Imatinib for a parent or family member?

A son, daughter, spouse or another caregiver may start a request on behalf of the patient, including from another country. Enter the patient's name exactly as it appears on the prescription. The prescription should come from the patient’s treating clinician; we then assess whether an appropriate route may be available for Ghana.

How a Imatinib access request is assessed for Ghana

Submit a request with the medicine, strength, patient details and destination. We assess the prescription status and whether an appropriate route may be available.
